Airoli House Fire Injures Three, Destroys Household

A major fire broke out at a house in Airoli village on Sunday afternoon, injuring three people and destroying nearly 100 per cent of the household belongings and interiors.

The incident occurred at Room No. 202 in Jagdish Patil Nivas, where security guard Devidas Bhaurao Sonawane, 54, lived with his wife Sunita, 50, son Rohan, 30, and daughter Mansi, 28. The family had brought home a new LPG cylinder after the previous one was exhausted, and while fitting the regulator, it reportedly failed to fit properly.

According to preliminary information, the regulator suddenly came off during an attempt to remove and refit it, resulting in a substantial gas leak. Devidas reportedly placed the cylinder in a tub of water after noticing the leak and attempted to move his family members out of the house. He then stepped outside to inform the gas distributor.

Shortly afterwards, the accumulated gas is believed to have ignited, triggering a massive fire. Sunita suffered burns to her hands, legs and face, while Rohan sustained burns to the front portion of his body, both hands, waist and both legs. Neighbour Sarika Nilesh Kobale also suffered burn injuries to her hands, legs and neck.

Mansi escaped injury as she was in the balcony when the fire broke out. The injured are undergoing treatment at the Burn Hospital in Airoli and are reported to be in stable condition. The fire brigade was alerted and a team reached the spot, beginning firefighting operations at around 12.45 pm.

Local residents and police personnel helped shift the injured to the hospital. The fire caused extensive damage to the house, with almost all household articles and the interior premises destroyed. Rabale police are conducting further investigation and taking necessary action.
