Landslide Damages Yamunotri Highway

A 100-metre stretch of the Yamunotri National Highway in Uttarakhand was damaged due to a landslide triggered by heavy rains. The incident occurred near Syanachatti in Uttarkashi on Thursday, completely blocking traffic along the route.

The landslide affected an area of approximately 1 km, with debris causing significant damage to the road. According to Uttarkashi District Disaster Management Officer Shardul Gusain, vehicles bound for Yamunotri from Barkot have been stopped, while those returning from Janki Chatti have been held back.

Between 80 and 120 pilgrims were present at Yamunotri Dham when the route was closed, with about 100 of them stopped at Janki Chatti. The officials have ensured that vehicles are halted at safe locations to avoid any further accidents.

The restoration work on the damaged highway is being hampered by adverse weather conditions. Teams from the administration and the National Highways Authority are deployed at the site, but the rain and debris are causing significant difficulties in repairing the highway.

Manoj Rawat, executive engineer for the national highway, stated that road restoration work would be accelerated as soon as the weather conditions become favourable. The officials are hopeful that if the weather clears up, the route will be restored as soon as possible.

The landslide also caused damage to an old vacant building near the shops at Kaddukhal on National Highway 707A. However, two restaurants, roadside kiosks, and labour huts that were within the danger zone had already been evacuated before the landslide, preventing any casualties.

The incident highlights the challenges faced by the authorities in maintaining the national highways, especially during the monsoon season. The region is prone to landslides, and the authorities are working to ensure the safety of the pilgrims and commuters.

The Yamunotri National Highway is a crucial route for pilgrims visiting the Yamunotri Dham, and the closure of the route is likely to cause inconvenience to many. However, the authorities are working to restore the route as soon as possible, and the pilgrims are being provided with necessary assistance and support.

In conclusion, the landslide damage to the Yamunotri National Highway is a significant incident that highlights the need for constant vigilance and maintenance of the national highways, especially during the monsoon season. The authorities are working to restore the route, and the pilgrims are being provided with necessary support and assistance.
