China Sentences Ex-Official To Death For ₹2,800 Crore Bribery

A court in eastern China has handed down a death sentence to former Nanjing city official Yang Youlin, 69, after finding him guilty of accepting bribes worth over 2.2 billion yuan (approximately ₹2,800 crore) during his three-decade tenure. Yang was also convicted of embezzlement, abuse of power, and money laundering.

According to Chinese state media, this case is one of the country's most significant corruption scandals in recent years. Yang served in several key government positions in Nanjing between 1993 and 2023, allegedly utilizing his authority to facilitate companies and individuals in securing engineering contracts, land transfers, and financing. In return, he received substantial amounts of cash and expensive gifts.

Yang's case is linked to President Xi Jinping's ongoing anti-corruption campaign, which has targeted high-ranking government officials, military leaders, bankers, and executives across China. The campaign has resulted in investigations and punishments for thousands of officials. While the Chinese government claims the drive is aimed at eradicating corruption, critics argue that it has also been used to eliminate political opponents.

The Changzhou court described Yang's crimes as 'extremely serious' and stated that they caused 'exceptionally heavy losses' to the state and the public. Despite Yang's guilty plea and expression of regret during the trial, the court ruled that the severity of his offenses warranted the death penalty. The court noted that Yang's cooperation with investigators was insufficient to reduce his sentence.

It is rare for China to impose the death penalty in financial crime cases, but courts may award this punishment when corruption involves exceptionally large sums. In similar cases, former finance executive Lai Xiaomin was executed in 2021 for accepting bribes worth around ₹2,300 crore, and former Inner Mongolia official Li Jianping was also executed in 2024 for embezzlement and bribery involving over ₹3,800 crore. Many corruption cases in China result in life imprisonment or suspended death sentences that are later commuted.

The death penalty imposed on Yang reflects the severity of his crimes and the Chinese government's commitment to combating corruption. As part of President Xi's anti-graft campaign, the government has demonstrated its willingness to take strong action against officials who engage in corrupt practices, regardless of their position or influence.

The outcome of Yang's case serves as a warning to other officials who may be tempted to engage in corrupt activities. The Chinese government's efforts to eradicate corruption are ongoing, and this case highlights the importance of accountability and transparency in government. As the campaign continues, it is likely that more officials will face investigation and punishment for their roles in corrupt practices.

In conclusion, the death sentence imposed on Yang Youlin is a significant development in China's anti-corruption campaign. The case demonstrates the government's commitment to combating corruption and ensuring that officials are held accountable for their actions. As the campaign moves forward, it is likely that more cases will come to light, and officials who engage in corrupt practices will face severe consequences.
