Narmada Mission Launched With ₹100 Crore Funding

The Madhya Pradesh government has launched the 'Nirmal evam Aviral Maa Narmada Mission', also known as 'Naman Mission', to conserve the Narmada river. The mission aims to ensure the continuous flow of the river and protect its health.

The state cabinet approved the constitution of the mission, which will receive an annual funding of ₹100 crore through state grants. Additionally, ₹100 crore will be made available over five years for various works under existing schemes in exceptional circumstances.

The Narmada river is a vital source of water for around 33% of the state's population, who depend on it directly or indirectly. The mission will involve public participation through corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds, central assistance, and public-private partnerships (PPPs).

The administrative structure of the mission will be three-tier, with a Project Management Unit (PMU) constituted for technical efficiency. The PMU will utilize modern techniques such as artificial intelligence (AI), data analysis, geographic information system (GIS), remote sensing, decision support systems, and climate change modeling to monitor the river's health.

The mission's General Assembly will be chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, with the Panchayat Minister as vice-chairman and ministers from 19 partner departments as members. The assembly will also include 10 distinguished specialists from river science, water science, environment, biodiversity, and community management.

The executive committee will be chaired by the Chief Secretary, with the Panchayat department's Additional Chief Secretary as vice-chairman. Specialists from renowned national institutes such as IISER, IIT, IRMA, ICAR, and NEERI will be part of the executive committee.

During the discussion on the Narmada Mission, Panchayat Minister Prahalad Patel expressed concerns over the allocation of ₹100 crore, stating that it may not be sufficient. However, Chief Secretary Ashok Barnwal intervened, stating that the budgets of other partner departments will also be utilized for the mission.

The launch of the Narmada Mission is a significant step towards conserving the river and ensuring its continuous flow. The use of modern technologies such as AI and GIS will help monitor the river's health and identify areas that require attention.

The mission's success will depend on the effective implementation of its plans and the involvement of various stakeholders, including the public, government departments, and private organizations. The conservation of the Narmada river is crucial for the state's ecosystem and the well-being of its people.

In conclusion, the Narmada Mission is a vital initiative that aims to protect the Narmada river and ensure its continuous flow. With an annual funding of ₹100 crore and the use of modern technologies, the mission has the potential to make a significant impact on the river's health and the state's ecosystem.
