Surrendered Naxalites Hold Tricolour in MP's Balaghat

On Saturday, a group of surrendered Naxalites in Madhya Pradesh's Balaghat district celebrated Independence Day by holding the Tricolour for the first time. The former insurgents, who had laid down their arms, participated in the festivities with respect and honour.

More than 20 surrendered Naxalites, currently residing in a camp in Balaghat under police protection, held the national flag in their hands. This was a significant moment, as these individuals had previously been involved in armed insurgency against the state.

The Naxalites, mostly natives of Chhattisgarh, had surrendered in MP last year as part of the rehabilitation policy. They are now staying in a camp in Balaghat, where a special event was organised on Independence Day, attended by police officials.

In the final phase of surrender, 13 Naxalites, including four women, laid down their arms. One of them, Sunita, had a reward of Rs 14 lakh on her head. The ADG KP Venketshwar Rao stated that all 13 Naxalites were housed in the camp and celebrated Independence Day by holding the Tricolour and singing the national anthem.

This was a new scene in the hilly and remote villages of Mandla, Balaghat, and Dindori districts, where the Tricolour was hoisted after a long gap. The villagers of 644 villages sang the national anthem while holding the Tricolour, without any fear.

Before achieving Naxal-free status in December 2025, the Balaghat and Mandla districts of MP were considered safe havens for Naxals. The Naxals had entrenched themselves so deeply that local residents neither celebrated national festivals nor hoisted the Tricolour out of fear.

There were 35 villages across these two districts where Republic Day and Independence Day were not celebrated for nearly 35 years. The first FIR against Naxals in the region was registered at the Sitapala police station in Balaghat in 1990.

Madhya Pradesh declared itself Naxal-free in December 2025, marking a significant milestone in the state's history. The celebration of Independence Day by surrendered Naxalites is a step towards rehabilitation and integration into mainstream society.

The event signifies a new beginning for the former insurgents, who are now working towards rebuilding their lives. It also highlights the efforts of the state government and law enforcement agencies in bringing peace and stability to the region.
