Bhopal Flooded After 7 Inches Rain

Bhopal, the capital city of Madhya Pradesh, has been severely affected by continuous heavy rainfall, with nearly 7 inches of rain recorded in the last 24 hours. This is the highest single-day rainfall of the season so far. The Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) has received 19 flood-related complaints within 12 hours and has deployed around 50 dewatering pumps across the city to tackle the situation.

The BMC call centre received over 30 calls on Monday, with waterlogging reported in more than 50 localities, including Kolar Road, Narialkheda, Shiv Nagar, and Karond. The highly affected area was Udiya Basti, where water accumulated following intense rainfall, and civic teams had to evacuate residents to safer locations. The BMC also arranged 3,000 food packets for the affected residents.

Municipal commissioner Sanskriti Jain visited nearly 60% of the affected areas, directing officials to ensure continuous monitoring and immediate drainage of accumulated water. During the inspections, concerns were raised over drainage and engineering arrangements at several low-lying locations, including areas affected by ongoing Metro-related works.

The situation worsened after water from the overflowing Banganga River began flowing over the bridge near Intkhedi on Berasia Road. The route was closed as a precautionary measure, resulting in long queues of vehicles. Water also entered houses in several areas, with about two feet of water reported in Vasundhara Colony.

The continuous rainfall has also increased water levels in Bhopal's major reservoirs. The Kaliasot Dam rose by around one foot, the Kerwa Dam by approximately three feet, and the Kolar Dam by about one foot.

The district administration is on high alert, with Collector Priyank Mishra admitting that there were flood-like situations in the district. He visited the affected bridge near Intkhedi in the evening and said that barricading and diversions were being arranged at submerged bridges and causeways, while warning signboards were being installed and public movement had been restricted in vulnerable areas.

The MIC meeting, which was scheduled to take place, has been postponed due to the flood situation. The BMC has also removed fallen trees from several roads and public premises.

The flood situation in Bhopal has caused significant disruption to normal life, with residents facing difficulties due to waterlogging and flooding. The administration's efforts to tackle the situation are ongoing, with a focus on ensuring the safety of residents and restoring normalcy as soon as possible.

In conclusion, the flood situation in Bhopal is a significant concern, and the administration's response to the situation will be crucial in mitigating its impact. The city's residents will be hoping for a swift return to normalcy and an end to the flood-related disruptions.
