Indore Leads MP In Digital Payments With 51% UPI Adoption

Indore has emerged as the leader in Madhya Pradesh in terms of digital payment adoption, with 51% of account holders using digital means like UPI for transactions. This is significantly higher than the national average of 33%.

The city is followed by Ujjain and Bhopal, where 45% of account holders use digital means. Ujjain saw the biggest jump in digital transaction adoption, with a 9.99% increase in 2025-26.

Eight districts in Madhya Pradesh have digital transaction adoption rates higher than the national average. These include Indore, Bhopal, Ujjain, Singrauli, Ratlam, Gwalior, Satna, and Sehore.

On the other hand, some districts have lower digital transaction adoption rates, with less than 20% of account holders using UPI in places like Damoh, Panna, Shivpuri, Chhindwara, and Tikamgarh.

Indore and Bhopal dominate the state's digital economy, accounting for nearly half of the total transactions in terms of volume. Gwalior, Jabalpur, and Ujjain contribute around 30% of the volume, driven by retail shopping, tourism, and student populations.

Sagar, Satna, Rewa, and Ratlam account for up to 20% of the state's digital transactions. Predominantly rural districts like Jhabua, Alirajpur, and Dindori represent around 10% of the volume, with transactions mainly related to government direct benefit transfers and monthly ration distributions.

According to an RBI official, lack of awareness and fear of risk are the main reasons behind the lower adoption of digital means in some areas of the state. The official emphasized that it is essential to address these concerns to increase digital payment adoption.
