BMC Clarifies Rajawadi Hospital Infant Deaths

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a clarification regarding the deaths of three babies at its Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar. According to the BMC, there was no lapse in treatment in any of the three cases.

On August 26, three infant deaths were reported at the hospital, raising concerns over the quality of maternal and neonatal care. However, the BMC has stated that hospital records indicate that doctors and staff made every possible effort to save the patients and newborns.

The BMC reported that 13 deliveries were conducted in Unit 3 of the hospital on August 26, including eight Caesarean sections and five normal deliveries. Two cases involved intrauterine foetal deaths, and one involved a neonatal death.

In the first case, 37-week pregnant Hira Bhandari was admitted to the hospital with a foetal heartbeat that could not be clearly detected. A sonography confirmed intrauterine foetal death. The BMC stated that the absence of a foetal heartbeat after admission alone cannot establish that the death occurred at the hospital.

In the second case, 33-week pregnant Rehana Begum Khan had diabetes and hypertension, making the pregnancy high-risk. She had been advised regular antenatal check-ups but had not reported for medical follow-up for around 15 days. When she later reached the hospital, the sonography report confirmed that the foetus had died.

The third case involved 40-week-and-two-day pregnant Nusrat Jahan Khan, who was expecting her first child. Doctors performed a Caesarean section, and the newborn was shifted to the NICU for further treatment. Despite all efforts, the newborn died around one-and-a-half to two hours later.

The BMC maintained that the available medical records do not indicate any negligence or delay in treatment in the three cases. The civic administration has denied any lapses in treatment and stated that doctors and staff made every possible effort to save the patients and newborns.
