A massive security and traffic management plan has been put in place by the Pune Police for the annual Palkhi procession, which is expected to attract lakhs of Warkaris. The plan, which will be in effect from July 9 to 12, utilizes artificial intelligence and advanced surveillance technology to ensure the safety of devotees and prevent any untoward incidents.
According to Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, the primary objective of the security arrangements is to prevent stampedes, sabotage, or law-and-order incidents during the procession, while also safeguarding devotees and their belongings. Kumar stated that the Pune City Police have made comprehensive security arrangements, with nearly 7,000 police officers and personnel, along with QRT teams and SRPF, being deployed for the event.
The Palkhi schedule in Pune city has been announced, with Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj's Palkhi entering the city on July 9 through Bopkhel and proceeding to the Vitthal Temple in Bhawani Peth for its overnight stay. On the same day, Sant Tukaram Maharaj's Palkhi will enter the city via Harris Bridge in Khadki and reach the Nivdungya Vitthal Temple in Nana Peth for its halt. Both Palkhis will remain in Pune on July 10, before proceeding to their respective destinations on July 11 and 12.
To enable real-time monitoring of the procession, the Pune Police have installed 12 GPS devices, with eight devices placed at the front and rear of the two processions, and four devices installed on the Palkhi chariots of Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj and Sant Tukaram Maharaj. This system will allow officials to track the movement of the processions, monitor route progress, estimate arrival times, and assess crowd density throughout the event. Additionally, a total of 226 CCTV cameras have been installed along the Palkhi routes for round-the-clock surveillance.
