Bandra Football Ground Named After Olympic Hero Neville D'Souza Faces Takeover

The Bandra Football Ground, named after India's Olympic football hero Neville D'Souza, is set to be taken over by the BMC to build a convention centre. This move has sparked protests from football lovers across Mumbai.

Neville D'Souza, who passed away on March 16, 1980, at the age of 47, was a legendary footballer born in Assagao, Goa, on August 3, 1932. He began his career with Goan Sports Club before joining Tata's in Mumbai and then Caltex Football Club.

D'Souza is best known for scoring a hat-trick against hosts Australia at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. This historic win was a significant moment in India's Olympic football journey.

India had begun the decade by qualifying by default for the 1950 FIFA World Cup in Brazil after the other three countries in their group withdrew. However, the All India Football Federation failed to send the team. In 1951, India won gold in the inaugural Asian Games in New Delhi.

Having made their Olympic debut at the 1948 Games in London, India in Melbourne were drawn to face the hosts in their opening match. Legend has it that, on a bus journey in Melbourne, Neville was mistaken for a hockey player. When he said he was part of the Indian football contingent, it was met with incredulity.

Neville then made the bold prediction that India would beat the Aussies in their opening match. And that is exactly what happened. India won 4-2, with the fourth goal scored by vice-captain J. Kittu after Neville's three.

So incensed were the Aussies that they challenged India to a grudge match after the Olympics were over, thirsting to avenge the humiliation on their home soil. Instead, they were crushed 7-1, with D'Souza netting twice.

This is not the first time D'Souza's name has entered the national consciousness. In August 2000, he was mentioned on the popular TV quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati, presented by Amitabh Bachchan. A question about him could have made a Kolkata shopkeeper the first grand-prize winner of Rs 1 crore.

The current plans to take over the Bandra Football Ground have sparked a storm of protests from football lovers across the metropolis. The ground, named after D'Souza, holds significant importance for the football community in Mumbai.

The BMC's decision to build a convention centre on the ground has raised concerns about the future of football in the city. The protests highlight the need to preserve the city's sporting heritage and ensure that the legacy of heroes like Neville D'Souza is protected.

In conclusion, the takeover of the Bandra Football Ground named after Neville D'Souza has brought attention to the legendary footballer's achievements and the importance of preserving the city's sporting heritage. The protests against the BMC's plans demonstrate the significance of the ground and the need to protect it for future generations of football players and fans.
