Maharashtra FDA Cracks Down On IRCTC, ISKCON Juhu Food Outlets

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has taken strict action against several food establishments linked to the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) and ISKCON Juhu in Mumbai.

The FDA conducted inspections at five IRCTC-linked establishments in Mumbai and Thane, as well as food outlets operating on the premises of ISKCON Juhu, and found multiple food safety and hygiene violations.

The inspections revealed several lapses, including poor hygiene, improper storage of food, pest-related concerns, clogged drains, inadequate testing, and missing safety records.

One of the IRCTC-linked establishments, R.K. Associates & Hoteliers Pvt. Ltd., had its licence suspended by the FDA due to serious deficiencies found during an inspection on September 2. The establishment was re-inspected, but the deficiencies continued, prompting the licence suspension.

Four other IRCTC-linked establishments, including Om Sai Ram Enterprises and Ambuj Hotels & Real Estate Pvt Ltd in Chembur, Express Food Services in Powai, and Araha Hospitality Pvt Ltd in Kopri Colony, Thane East, were issued improvement notices.

The FDA also initiated action against food establishments at ISKCON Juhu, suspending the licences of three establishments after detecting several violations related to food safety and hygiene.

During the inspections at ISKCON Juhu, officials found inadequate testing of food and drinking water, improper segregation of raw and cooked food, clogged drains and water accumulation, along with pest-related concerns.

At one of the restaurants, inspectors allegedly discovered pest droppings inside a storeroom, while an open rear kitchen entrance was found to potentially allow pests to enter. Food handlers were also reportedly not wearing prescribed protective clothing.

The FDA further found that records related to employees' medical examinations, vaccinations, and food safety training were unavailable.

The action taken by the Maharashtra FDA is a significant step towards ensuring food safety and hygiene in the state. The FDA's inspections and subsequent action will help to protect consumers from the risk of foodborne illnesses.

The Maharashtra FDA's crackdown on IRCTC and ISKCON Juhu food outlets is a reminder of the importance of maintaining high standards of food safety and hygiene in the food industry.

In recent years, there have been several instances of food safety lapses in Mumbai, highlighting the need for regular inspections and strict action against erring establishments.

The FDA's action is expected to have a positive impact on the food industry in Maharashtra, promoting a culture of food safety and hygiene among food establishments.

Overall, the Maharashtra FDA's crackdown on IRCTC and ISKCON Juhu food outlets is a welcome step towards ensuring the safety and well-being of consumers in the state.
