BMC Clears 3,841 Hazardous Trees And Branches After Fatal Incidents

A major drive to remove hazardous trees and branches has been undertaken by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in Mumbai, following three fatal incidents during the monsoon season. Between June 22 and July 17, the BMC cleared 3,841 dangerous trees and branches from public spaces and private premises across the city.

The BMC's Gardens Department has been working tirelessly to assess and clear hazardous trees and branches, with a total of 902 trees uprooted and 1,251 branches collapsed across the city during the same period. The department has also identified 542 locations where work is still underway to remove hazardous trees and branches.

According to civic data, 367 trees were uprooted in civic areas, with 359 removed and work pending at eight locations. On private premises, 524 trees fell, with 452 cleared and action pending at 72 locations. Additionally, 552 branches fell in civic areas, with 541 removed and work underway at 11 locations, while 723 branches collapsed on private premises, with 632 cleared and action pending at 91 locations.

The BMC's Gardens Department has also undertaken tree trimming at 2,206 unclaimed locations, with work completed at 1,857 sites and underway at the remaining 360. The department has urged citizens to exercise caution during heavy rain or strong winds and to avoid standing under trees.

Citizens have been advised to immediately contact the BMC helpline at 1916 if they spot a fallen tree, a tree posing a risk of collapse, or a fallen branch. The BMC's control room, ward offices, and emergency teams remain operational round the clock, with adequate manpower, equipment, and machinery on standby throughout the monsoon to respond to such incidents.

The drive to clear hazardous trees and branches comes after three fatal incidents in the city. On June 30, an 11-year-old boy was killed when a roadside tree uprooted and crashed onto his school bus in Chembur. On July 5, an 18-year-old boy died in Aarey Colony after a tree branch fell on his motorcycle. On July 6, a 63-year-old man was killed in Kurla West when a tree collapsed onto the shop where he was present.

The BMC's efforts to remove hazardous trees and branches are a welcome step towards ensuring public safety during the monsoon season. The civic body's emphasis on citizen participation, with the BMC helpline available for reporting hazardous trees and branches, is also a positive move.

As the monsoon season continues, the BMC's Gardens Department will remain vigilant, with a focus on removing hazardous trees and branches to prevent further incidents. The department's efforts will go a long way in ensuring that citizens can navigate the city safely during this time.

In the larger context, the BMC's drive to remove hazardous trees and branches highlights the importance of urban planning and maintenance in preventing accidents and ensuring public safety. As Mumbai continues to grow and develop, it is essential that the civic body prioritizes the maintenance of public spaces and infrastructure to prevent such incidents.

The BMC's actions will have a significant impact on the safety and well-being of Mumbai's citizens, and it is crucial that the civic body continues to work towards preventing such incidents in the future. With the monsoon season expected to continue for several more weeks, the BMC's efforts will be closely watched by citizens, who will be hoping for a safe and incident-free remainder of the season.

In conclusion, the BMC's drive to remove hazardous trees and branches is a crucial step towards ensuring public safety during the monsoon season. The civic body's efforts will go a long way in preventing further incidents and ensuring that citizens can navigate the city safely. As the city continues to grow and develop, it is essential that the BMC prioritizes urban planning and maintenance to prevent accidents and ensure public safety.
