Madhya Pradesh Sees 973 Pothole Deaths in 6 Years

A total of 973 lives were lost in Madhya Pradesh due to pothole-related accidents between 2020 and 2025. The data, compiled by the Police Training and Research Institute, reveals a significant decline in such fatalities in 2025, with only four deaths recorded that year.

This is in stark contrast to the 277 fatalities reported in 2024, which was the highest death toll during the six-year period. The state also witnessed a total of 1,069 pothole-related accidents in 2024.

The sharp decline in pothole-related deaths in 2025 has raised questions about the accuracy of the data, given that the road conditions in the state capital remain a major concern. Many roads in the city are plagued by deep potholes, waterlogging, and damaged surfaces, posing a significant risk to motorists.

Traffic police officials have stated that accidents often occur when drivers attempt to suddenly avoid potholes, with two-wheeler riders being particularly vulnerable. Despite this, action against agencies or contractors responsible for maintaining roads is reportedly rare.

The Additional DCP traffic, Basant Kumar Kaul, has said that the traffic police does not maintain a separate record of accidents specifically caused by potholes. However, traffic congestion caused by damaged roads is reported to the concerned departments for necessary action.

The overall decline in road accidents and fatalities in the state has been attributed to various road safety measures implemented by the government. The latest comparative road accident figures indicate that overall road accident fatalities declined in the first half of 2026, with 8,273 deaths recorded between January and June, compared to 9,078 during the same period in 2025.
