Aaditya Thackeray Opposes Bandra Football Ground Conversion

Mumbai's Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray has strongly opposed the proposed change in the reservation of the Neville D’Souza Football Ground at Bandra Reclamation. The ground is currently reserved as a playground, but the Mumbai Municipal Corporation and MHADA have proposed changing it to an exhibition/convention centre.

Thackeray accused the government of systematically reducing open spaces and playgrounds in Mumbai. He appealed to Mumbaikars to gather in the city on Sunday at 5 pm to protest against the alleged attempts to take over open spaces and playgrounds. The protest will be held without any political party flags, and participants are encouraged to carry the Tricolour.

The Bombay High Court has temporarily restrained the civic body from taking further action in the matter until the next hearing, which is scheduled for September 10. The Mumbai Football Association has challenged the proposed change in reservation before the High Court. The court observed that open spaces must be preserved for children and future generations and questioned where children would play if playgrounds and open spaces continued to be taken over.

Thackeray also claimed that 22 plots belonging to the city’s public bus undertaking BEST are already being privatised. An open space meant for a sports complex is being given to a petrol pump, he alleged. He targeted the ruling parties, alleging that they were “anti-Gen Z” and claimed that playgrounds and open spaces were being targeted.

Thackeray cited several locations, including an open ground in Andheri that he said was developed during his tenure as Environment Minister and is now used by residents for sports. He also criticised Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde, alleging that Rs 25 lakh was being spent on social media promotion. Thackeray questioned the manner in which public money was being spent, stating that it was taxpayers’ and Mumbaikars’ funds.

The issue of open spaces and playgrounds in Mumbai has been a contentious one, with many residents and activists arguing that the city needs more green spaces and recreational areas. The proposed conversion of the Neville D’Souza Football Ground has sparked widespread outrage, with many calling for the government to preserve the city's open spaces.

The protest on Sunday is expected to draw a large crowd, with many Mumbaikars expressing their support for Thackeray's cause on social media. The issue is likely to be a major point of contention in the coming days, with the High Court's next hearing scheduled for September 10.

In the context of Mumbai's rapidly growing population and urbanisation, the preservation of open spaces and playgrounds is crucial. The city's residents need recreational areas where they can relax, exercise, and socialise. The government's proposed conversion of the Neville D’Souza Football Ground has raised concerns about the city's priorities and the impact on its residents.

The significance of this issue cannot be overstated. The preservation of open spaces and playgrounds is essential for the well-being and quality of life of Mumbai's residents. The government's actions will be closely watched, and the outcome of the High Court's hearing will be eagerly anticipated. As the city continues to grow and develop, it is essential that the government prioritises the needs of its residents and preserves the city's open spaces and playgrounds.

In conclusion, the proposed conversion of the Neville D’Souza Football Ground has sparked widespread outrage, and the issue is likely to be a major point of contention in the coming days. The preservation of open spaces and playgrounds is crucial for the well-being and quality of life of Mumbai's residents, and the government's actions will be closely watched.
