Guwahati Hosts First International Marathon With ₹1.25-Crore Prize

Guwahati will host its first International Marathon on February 7, 2027, with a total prize purse of ₹1.25 crore. The event is part of the Assam government's efforts to strengthen the city's position as a destination for international sporting events and sports tourism.

The inaugural edition is expected to draw around 12,000 participants from across India and overseas. The event will feature five race categories — Marathon (42.195 km), Half Marathon (21.097 km), 10 km Run, 5 km Run and 1.5 km Run.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched the logo of the Guwahati International Marathon in the presence of former India captain and global ambassador of Indian cricket, Sunil Manohar Gavaskar. Speaking at the launch, Sarma said hosting an international sporting event of this scale would provide an opportunity to enhance Guwahati's profile and boost sports tourism in Assam.

The Chief Minister said participants and visitors from different parts of India and abroad would get an opportunity to experience Guwahati's heritage, culture, hospitality and tourism attractions. Sarma said the Guwahati International Marathon was a landmark initiative reflecting Assam's growing aspirations on the national and global sporting stage.

Registration for the event will begin on September 11. Sarma has become the first registered participant of the marathon and expressed hope that thousands of people would join him in the inaugural edition. The Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC) will be associated with the event as the State Sponsor, while TOPCEM Cement is the Associate Sponsor.

PMG Sports LLP is promoting the marathon, and Sarma thanked PMG and Gavaskar for bringing the event to Guwahati. Gavaskar said running had the ability to bring people together and expressed support for making Guwahati part of the international marathon circuit.
