Navi Mumbai Students Recover From Electric Shock
Two college students recover after electric shock in Nerul. They were treated at Fortis Hiranandani Hospital.

Two college students from Navi Mumbai have made a full recovery after suffering severe electric shocks from exposed underground live electrical wires in a waterlogged stretch in Nerul.
The incident occurred on July 1 when 17-year-old Shubhangi Balkhande and her friend, 19-year-old Ujwala Wagh, stepped into the waterlogged area while returning from college. They were struck by a live current and collapsed on the spot.
An auto-rickshaw driver rushed them to a hospital in Nerul, and they were later shifted to Fortis Hiranandani Hospital for specialized treatment. Upon arrival, both patients were drowsy but responsive and complained of generalized weakness, fatigue, and body pain.
Considering the risk of delayed complications associated with electrical injuries, they were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for close observation. Doctors noted that electrical injuries can cause significant internal damage even without visible external burns, affecting muscles, the heart, kidneys, and body chemistry.
Ujwala underwent additional investigations due to persistent upper back pain, which ruled out major underlying injuries and indicated muscle and soft tissue damage caused by the electric shock.
According to Dr. Swapnil Khadke, Head of Department and Consultant – Critical Care at Fortis Hiranandani Hospital, early transfer to a specialized critical care facility and prompt treatment helped identify and manage potential complications.
With continuous monitoring and treatment, both patients showed steady clinical improvement and were shifted out of the ICU to the general ward on July 4. They were discharged after regaining the ability to walk and were declared clinically stable.
Dr. Ashutosh Pandey, Facility Director, Fortis Hiranandani Hospital, emphasized the importance of a coordinated approach in treating electrical injuries.
Shubhangi's father, Subhash Balkhande, expressed gratitude to the auto-rickshaw driver who helped the students immediately and to the doctors and staff at Fortis Hiranandani Hospital for their timely and effective treatment.
The incident highlights the importance of ensuring public safety, particularly in waterlogged areas where the risk of electrical shocks is higher.
The recovery of the two students is a relief to their families and the community, and it underscores the significance of prompt medical attention and specialized care in treating electrical injuries.
In Navi Mumbai, the incident serves as a reminder of the need for vigilance and precautions to prevent such accidents, especially during the monsoon season when waterlogging is common.
The successful treatment and recovery of the students demonstrate the capabilities of medical facilities in Navi Mumbai and the importance of coordinated care in managing complex injuries.
