Pavana Dam Discharge Reaches 5,720 Cusecs

The Water Resources Department increased water discharge from Pavana Dam to 5,720 cusecs on Monday due to heavy rainfall in the catchment area. The reservoir has reached 99% of its storage capacity, prompting officials to warn of a possible increase in discharge up to 15,000 cusecs if rain continues.

The heavy rainfall has caused a sharp rise in inflow, leading to the Pavana River flowing bank-to-bank. To regulate the dam's water level, the discharge will first be increased to 10,000 cusecs.

The department has issued an alert to people living along the riverbanks, asking them to move their belongings to safer places. Continued rainfall could cause a sudden rise in river and stream water levels, leading to flooding in low-lying areas.

Pavana Dam supplies water to Pimpri-Chinchwad city, the MIDC area, and several municipal councils and villages. Despite the dam reaching nearly full capacity, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has announced that the existing 15% water cut will continue.

The civic body clarified that the cut will be withdrawn only if the reservoir reaches 100% storage by October. The alternate-day water supply system, introduced in 2019, will also continue until Pimpri-Chinchwad starts receiving water from the Bhama Askhed project.

Residents have complained about irregular and inadequate water supply under the current system. The increased water discharge from Pavana Dam is expected to provide relief to over 30 lakh Pimpri-Chinchwad residents, securing the water supply for months.
