IIT Kanpur May Give Second Chance To Rejected Cybersecurity Student

A student who was denied admission to the Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur's (IIT-K) Bachelor of Cyber Security programme may be given a second chance. The student had allegedly hacked the websites of IIT-K and IIT Madras after being rejected.

The incident came to light when the student claimed on social media that he had breached the websites of IIT-K and IIT Madras. He shared screenshots of the alleged intrusion, stating that his objective was not to cause harm but to demonstrate his capabilities.

According to the student's posts, he had completed the application process and submitted proof of his cyber security work. However, he claimed he was not shortlisted and was denied the opportunity to participate in the hackathon that formed part of the admission process.

IIT-K Director Manindra Agrawal stated that the student was not shortlisted due to a lack of prior experience in cyber security. Agrawal said that while admission is not possible for the current academic session, the institute will invite the student to assess his technical skills through a proper test. If the student proves his competence, he may be given an opportunity in the next admission cycle.

Agrawal confirmed that the student had gained access to certain sections of the official websites of IIT-K and IIT Madras. Senior faculty members and engineers have been asked to interact with the student and counsel him that unauthorised access to computer systems is illegal and should never be repeated.

The institute had initially considered lodging an FIR but decided to first verify the student's claims and evaluate his technical abilities before taking any further action. IIT-K has previously encouraged young cybersecurity talent, offering a position at its C3iHub to a youth who had identified vulnerabilities in the CBSE's online screen-marking portal.

The decision to give the student a second chance is seen as a positive move by the institute, acknowledging the student's skills and willingness to learn. The incident highlights the importance of providing opportunities for young talent in the field of cybersecurity.
