IIT Indore's Chip-Design Tool AspireHLS Goes Global

IIT Indore has developed a new chip-design tool called AspireHLS, which helps engineers design electronic chips found in devices like smartphones and cameras.

The tool was created by Prof Anirban Sengupta and his team at the Hardware Security and Reliability Lab after nearly 10 years of research. AspireHLS is now free and publicly available for students, researchers, and companies to use.

In a short time since its release, the AspireHLS product package has been downloaded by users in over 60 countries, including the US, France, England, Singapore, China, and Japan.

Designing a computer chip is a complex process that requires engineers to sketch out how it should work and then translate that design into a detailed blueprint. AspireHLS automates this translation step, taking a chip design written by an engineer and converting it into a detailed, ready-to-manufacture circuit blueprint.

The tool also works out the best possible balance between the chip's space and speed, making it especially useful for devices that need to process large amounts of data quickly.

Most tools like AspireHLS are either expensive commercial products or limited academic prototypes. AspireHLS brings several capabilities together for the first time and gives students and smaller research teams access to tools that were previously hard to come by.

Prof Suhas Joshi, Director of IIT Indore, said that AspireHLS reflects the institution's commitment to developing indigenous technologies with global relevance.

Prof Anirban Sengupta, who led the development of AspireHLS, said that the tool is a new publicly available end-to-end High-Level Synthesis tool for designing digital hardware systems.

AspireHLS is a significant innovation in the field of chip design and has the potential to make a significant impact on the global electronics industry.

The tool's global adoption is a testament to the quality of research being done at IIT Indore and its commitment to developing practical and globally relevant technologies.

AspireHLS is expected to be widely used in the development of electronic devices, from smartphones to multimedia systems, and will help engineers design chips that are faster, more efficient, and more reliable.
