Indore Metro Launches First TBM For Underground Construction

The Indore Metro project has reached a significant milestone with the launch of its first Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), named ‘Narmada’, at the shaft near the airport. This marks the beginning of the underground construction work for the metro project.

The TBM was launched by the Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MPMRCL) on Thursday, using advanced engineering and safety systems. The machine will be used to construct the underground metro tunnel between Airport and Bada Ganpati.

The TBM ‘Narmada’ weighs around 410 metric tonnes and was first assembled at ground level before being lowered into the airport shaft through a specially designed arrangement. A combination of Megalift System and Strand Jack Assembly was used to lift, shift and safely lower the TBM into the shaft.

The successful launch of the TBM is expected to accelerate work on the underground section of the metro project. The machine will enable construction in a controlled manner while reducing the need for extensive surface-level excavation in built-up areas.

MPMRCL managing director S Krishna Chaitanya inspected the entire launching process and congratulated the engineering team and metro officials for successfully completing the technically challenging operation. The operation involved stringent safety protocols, technical expertise, and detailed coordination among various teams.

The use of the TBM will help minimize disruptions to traffic and daily life in the city. The machine will work around the clock to construct the tunnel, and its progress will be closely monitored by the MPMRCL.
