Piyush Goyal Seeks Stronger India-Japan Economic Ties

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has begun his official visit to Japan, aiming to strengthen the India-Japan economic partnership.

Goyal is leading India's largest-ever business delegation to Japan, comprising over 200 business representatives, and will visit Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka from August 24-27.

On Monday, Goyal met with Shingo Ueno, President and CEO of Sumitomo Corporation, to discuss opportunities for deeper engagement with India in energy transformation, mobility, and industrial infrastructure.

The minister also met with Toshiaki Nagasato, President and Representative Director of Meiji Seika Pharma Co., Ltd, to explore avenues for cooperation in the pharmaceutical sector and expand the company's manufacturing and R&D footprint in India.

Goyal noted that India's investment-led growth and expanding manufacturing ecosystem offer immense opportunities for greater collaboration with Japan.

The Indian business delegation spans various sectors, including manufacturing, semiconductors, clean energy, steel, automotive, financial services, healthcare, and start-ups.

The visit reflects the scale of ambition both nations bring to their Special Strategic and Global Partnership and comes at a time when India and Japan are looking to deepen trade and investment ties.

In Tokyo, Goyal will hold meetings with top Japanese conglomerates and industrial houses, as well as a round-table with Keidanren, the apex body representing over 1,500 leading Japanese companies.

Dedicated sessions are planned on semiconductors and artificial intelligence, start-ups, and engagement with foreign institutional investors, highlighting India's growing pull as an investment and innovation destination.

The visit will conclude in Osaka with an Investors and Business Roadshow, along with meetings with leading Japanese companies.
