Bombay Presidency Radio Club's Food Licence Suspended

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the food business licence of The Bombay Presidency Radio Club Limited after an inspection revealed serious food safety and hygiene violations.

The inspection, conducted on August 19, 2026, under the direction of Maharashtra Food Safety Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, found a dead cockroach and a fly infestation in the kitchen.

The establishment was found to have violated provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and hygiene requirements prescribed under Schedule 4 of the Food Safety and Standards Rules and Regulations, 2011.

During the inspection, officials found flies across various areas of the kitchen, a dead cockroach and exposed cockroach traps near the utensil-washing section. The FDA also flagged flaking ceiling plaster above food preparation areas, raising concerns over possible physical contamination.

Washing powder and other chemicals were stored alongside food items, while utensils and food were kept directly on the floor. Refrigerators used to store non-vegetarian food were found to be in an unhygienic condition.

Following the inspection, the club has been directed to stop all food purchase, sale and distribution activities. Any violation of the order could invite stringent legal action under food safety laws.

The FDA's action is part of the statewide ‘Safe Food, Safe Maharashtra’ campaign, which aims to ensure food safety and hygiene in the state.

As part of this campaign, FDA Commissioner Mundhe said the department's next focus would be edible oil. The FDA would take action against violations at every stage of the edible oil supply chain, including production, packaging, distribution and use.

Manufacturers, distributors, retailers and establishments that repeatedly reuse cooking oil could face stringent legal action, including imprisonment and fines of up to Rs 10 lakh.

The suspension of the food licence is a significant step towards ensuring food safety in the state. It highlights the importance of maintaining high standards of hygiene and safety in food establishments.

The action taken by the FDA is a warning to all food establishments in the state to adhere to food safety norms and regulations. It is essential for consumers to be aware of the food safety standards in the establishments they visit.

In conclusion, the suspension of the food licence of The Bombay Presidency Radio Club Limited is a significant step towards ensuring food safety in Maharashtra. It emphasizes the need for food establishments to maintain high standards of hygiene and safety to prevent food-borne illnesses and ensure public health.
