Mumbai's Tallest Ganpati Idol Stands 45 Feet

A 45-foot Ganpati idol in Saki Naka has been recognised as Mumbai's tallest by the Winners Book of World Records. The idol, consecrated by the Sakinakyacha Maharaja Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal, was awarded a world record certificate on Tuesday evening.

The ceremony was attended by Dr Esha Agarwal, former Miss India and chairman of the Winners Book of World Records, and Dr Deepak Harke, founder-president of the organisation. The mandal's office bearers received the plaque amidst cheers from hundreds of local residents and volunteers.

The 45-foot idol, housed at the Samhita Complex near the Telephone Exchange in Saki Naka, showcases Lord Ganesha in a fiercely regal posture. The idol adorns a traditional Peshwai pheta and holds a sword and a trishul in its hands. The pandal has been designed to imitate the historic Malhar Temple of Jejuri to complement the martial theme.

According to the mandal's office bearers, artisans spent over one and a half months constructing the idol directly on-site due to its immense dimensions. The mandal's secretary, Jack Jikamade, said that the Ganesha idol has added a chapter of dignity to the cultural and religious splendour of Mumbai.

The idol's aagman earlier this month drew thousands of devotees to the narrow arteries of Saki Naka. However, the 45ft structure is expected to bring planning and logistical challenges to the fore during the visarjan ceremony. The mandal has planned to deploy a massive industrial crane to assist in the final immersion ritual.

The civic body and the city police will be undertaking special measures along the route to ensure smooth conclusion of the ritual, which is expected to draw thousands of devotees. Overhead cables and utility wires along the procession path are either being temporarily removed or elevated to guarantee safe clearance.
