Railway Minister Announces New East-West Rail Corridor For Maharashtra

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced a new east-west rail corridor to connect several unserved areas of Maharashtra on Thursday. The proposed corridor between Surat and Dankuni will include dedicated freight and passenger services, providing connectivity to areas in western Maharashtra, Nashik, and other regions.

The announcement was made during a function to flag off the new CSMT-Sawantwadi Road Express, where Vaishnaw addressed the gathering via video link from Delhi. He stated that the east-west corridor is being designed to connect many areas of Maharashtra that have never been connected before.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had previously suggested bringing the eastern and western freight corridors together and connecting them with new industrial development zones. Vaishnaw said that the entire team worked on the proposal, keeping this in mind.

The eastern and western Dedicated Freight Corridors have been completed, which will significantly strengthen Maharashtra's industrial development by facilitating the movement of goods from Jawaharlal Nehru Port to northern, eastern, and central parts of the country. The completion of the freight corridors will also boost activity at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) and strengthen industrial development in Mumbai and its surrounding areas.

Vaishnaw also referred to Mumbai's suburban railway network, stating that around 3,200 local train services are currently operated in the city. He said that increasing the number of services by about 10 per cent would improve passenger movement. The Railways is undertaking systematic work to increase capacity, improve signalling, and introduce new-generation suburban trains.

The minister announced that the Railways had ordered the Integral Coach Factory (Chennai) to manufacture 28 AC local trains, with the first train expected to enter production in 2027. By 2030, Mumbai will have its own 238 local trains, which will bring a major transformation to the city's suburban railway system.

The increase in rolling stock, capacity, and signalling will enable Mumbai to handle more suburban services and bring about a major change in the city's local train network by 2030. The new east-west rail corridor and the expansion of Mumbai's suburban railway network are expected to provide a major impetus to industrial and rural development in Maharashtra.

The announcement is a significant development for the state, which has been seeking improved connectivity and infrastructure to boost its economy. The new rail corridor and the expansion of the suburban railway network are expected to have a positive impact on the state's industrial and rural development.
