British-Era Silver Coins Uncovered in MP's Morena

A significant discovery was made in Morena, Madhya Pradesh, during excavation work for a Greenfield Highway. British-era silver coins, including a one-rupee coin from 1913, were unearthed near Dongarpur Lodha village.

The coins were found by local villagers and a JCB operator during construction work. Following the discovery, police and administrative teams arrived at the site to secure the recovered coins.

One of the coins carries the inscription “GEORGE V KING EMPEROR” along with the year 1913, while the reverse reads “ONE RUPEE INDIA.” According to Archaeology Officer Ashok Sharma, the coin weighs around 11.6 grams and contains approximately 91% silver.

These coins were issued between 1911 and 1936, during the reign of British King George V. They were minted at the Mumbai and Kolkata mints, with a standard weight of 11.66 grams and a diameter of 30.5 mm.

The recovered coins are currently being kept secure at Mata Basaiya police station and will be handed over to the Archaeology Department after completion of the investigation. Officials are trying to determine the exact number of coins recovered and their historical significance.

The administration will seek expert assessment to establish the historical and archaeological significance of the coins. The 1913 coin features the name and portrait of George V on one side, while the other side carries “ONE RUPEE INDIA” within a decorative wreath.
