Bollywood Enters Comic Con
Bollywood films like Baahubali and Ramayana to be showcased at Comic Con, Indian cinema's new promotional avenue

Indian cinema is slowly making its mark at Comic Con, a platform traditionally dominated by Hollywood. The upcoming movie Ramayana, directed by Nitesh Tiwari and starring Ranbir Kapoor, is set to be launched at the San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) on July 23, 2026.
The film's official first look and exclusive footage will be showcased at Ballroom 20 in San Diego, alongside other big-budget Hollywood movies like Avengers: Doomsday and Blade Runner 2099.
The first Indian film to enter this realm was Baahubali, which was followed by Nag Ashwin's Kalki 2898 AD, also known as Project K, at the SDCC in July 2023. The event was attended by Prabhas and Kamal Haasan.
Other Indian films like Varanasi, starring Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra, and Prithviraj Sukumaran, have also made their way to Comic Con. The film showcased its exclusive content at CCXP (Comic Con Experience) Mexico in April this year, including a special behind-the-scenes glimpse.
However, the event faced negative online chatter due to empty seats at the panel, despite others arguing that the photos did not capture the entire picture.
More recently, Sidharth Malhotra and Tamannaah Bhatia promoted their upcoming film Vvan at the Mumbai Comic Con. The film is about a goddess who awakens in a forbidden forest and has a graphic novel spin-off, which is set to release months before the film.
According to Alok Sharma, Co-founder and CCO of Indusverse, the comic book was written to expand the universe of Vvan and build anticipation for the film's release. He stated that Comic Con India, Mumbai, was the perfect platform to unveil the universe due to its passionate audience.
Jatin Varma, founder of Comic Con India, has witnessed the entire trajectory of Bollywood and Comic Con map out. He explained how Indian cinema's entry into Comic Con has been a gradual process, with more films being showcased at the event in recent years.
This shift towards Comic Con as a promotional avenue for Indian cinema is significant, as it provides a new platform for filmmakers to showcase their work and connect with fans.
The entry of Indian cinema into Comic Con is a testament to the growing popularity of Indian films globally and the increasing recognition of the country's rich cultural heritage.
As Indian cinema continues to make its mark at Comic Con, it will be interesting to see how this platform shapes the future of film promotions in the country.
