Mumbai Reservoirs Fill to 29% After Rains

Mumbai's water shortage has seen some relief after eight days of relentless rainfall. The total water level of the seven lakes supplying water to Mumbai reached 28.92% on Tuesday morning, with a 12% increase in the past 24 hours due to heavy downpours in Thane, Palghar, and Nashik districts.

The increase in water levels has provided the city with a water stock equivalent to around 40 days. The total available water for use on Tuesday morning was 4.18 lakh million litres (ML), compared to 2.44 lakh ML on Monday morning. However, despite the improvement in water levels, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to retain the 10% water cut in Mumbai.

According to a senior officer from the BMC's Hydraulic Engineering Department, the water cut will continue until all seven dams overflow, which is expected to happen by the end of July. The officer stated that the current water levels will last until September 16-17, but the BMC wants to ensure that water is available till the next monsoon.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted that the intensity of rainfall in Mumbai and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region is likely to decrease, with light to moderate rain expected to continue for the remaining days of the week. A yellow alert has been issued for heavy rainfall in Raigad and Palghar districts for July 8.

The rainfall has caused some incidents in the city, with 466 tree falls, 26 short circuits, and 38 wall or house collapses reported from Monday to Tuesday. Two senior citizens and two minors were injured in these incidents. The BMC has advised citizens to take necessary precautions and stay safe during the rainy season.

The improvement in water levels is a welcome relief for Mumbai residents, who have been facing water shortages for several months. However, the retention of the 10% water cut means that citizens will have to continue to conserve water until the BMC decides to lift the cut. With the monsoon season expected to continue for the next few months, the BMC will be closely monitoring the water levels and taking necessary steps to ensure that the city has a sufficient water supply.

In the next few days, the BMC will be assessing the water levels and deciding on the next course of action. The city's residents will be hoping that the water cut is lifted soon, but for now, they will have to continue to use water judiciously. The BMC has appealed to citizens to cooperate and conserve water to ensure that the city's water supply lasts until the next monsoon.

As the rainy season continues, the BMC will be working to ensure that the city's water supply is sufficient and that the water cut is lifted as soon as possible. The corporation will be monitoring the water levels closely and taking necessary steps to ensure that the city's residents have access to sufficient water. With the improvement in water levels, the city is hopeful that the water shortage will be alleviated soon, and the 10% water cut will be lifted,
