Mumbai Police Arrest LPG Cylinder Thief Within 24 Hours

A brazen theft occurred at police quarters located next to the Mumbai Police Headquarters, where five LPG cylinders belonging to police families were stolen. The incident raised concerns about security in the area.

The Azad Maidan police registered a case on August 11 under Section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). However, the police successfully arrested the accused, Krishnakumar Ramchandra Gupta, within 24 hours.

Gupta, 30, is originally from Meru village in Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand and has been living and working in Mumbai for the past five months. During interrogation, he allegedly told police that he had suffered a loss of around ₹12 lakh in the share market in 2022 and was struggling to pay his loan EMIs.

The stolen cylinders, worth around ₹11,500, belonged to five police families residing in the quarters. The residents usually kept their LPG cylinders in the common verandah outside their homes, assuming the area was safe from theft due to its proximity to the Mumbai Police Headquarters.

Complainant Manisha Patil, who has been living in the same room for nearly 20 years, discovered that her LPG cylinder was missing on August 11. After searching the surrounding area, she found that cylinders had also been stolen from other residents' homes.

The stolen cylinders included an HP Gas cylinder worth around ₹1,500, a filled cylinder worth around ₹2,500, and three other cylinders worth around ₹2,500 each.

The quick arrest of the thief has brought relief to the residents, but the incident has raised questions about the security measures in place at the police quarters.

The Mumbai Police's swift action in solving the case is a testament to their efficiency and commitment to maintaining law and order in the city.
