Mumbai Fires: 4 Injured in Dharavi, Blaze Erupts at Lamington Road

A fire broke out in a residential structure at Sion Dharavi Link Road on Sunday, injuring four residents, including two children. The incident was reported to the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) at 1:39 pm, but was extinguished by locals before the MFB arrived.

The fire occurred in room no 43 of a ground-plus-two-storey structure in Rajiv Gandhi Nagar, near Rajiv Gandhi Sports Club, Dharavi. The blaze was confined to an LPG cylinder of Bharat Gas. Four injured persons, identified as Poonam Jaiswal, 30, Rohan Gupta, 5, Rudra Gupta, 4, and Parvati Gandhari, 19, were shifted to Sion Hospital in a police van before the Fire Brigade reached the spot.

In another incident, a major fire broke out in a 7000 sq ft godown located in Saraswati Bhavan at Lamington Road on Saturday late night. The incident was reported to MFB at 11:33 pm, and a level II fire was declared at 12:40 am. The blaze was extinguished at 9:02 am, and no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, and further investigation is underway. The Mumbai Fire Brigade declared the fire at Lamington Road as Level-I, which was later upgraded to Level-II. Six fire brigade vehicles reached the spot and launched firefighting operations.

The injured persons in the Dharavi fire are being treated at Sion Hospital, and their condition is stable. Poonam Jaiswal suffered 30% burns, Rohan Gupta suffered 5% burns, Rudra Gupta suffered 8% burns, and Parvati Gandhari suffered 15% burns.

The BMC disaster management cell report stated that the fire at Lamington Road was confined to electric wiring, electric installation, stock of Lithium batteries, etc. in an area about 7000 sq. ft on ground, first floor, and on loft of ground plus partly one and partly upper two floored structure. Some portion of the loft had collapsed, and some portion was likely to be in a collapsible condition.
