Shiv Sena Corporator Ramesh Mhatre Arrested in Kalyan Hospital Assault Case

A dispute over the treatment of a pregnant woman at the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation-run Shastrinagar Hospital in Dombivli escalated into an alleged assault on doctors and medical staff. Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre reached the hospital with his supporters, and three doctors and other medical staff were assaulted. The assault was captured on CCTV, and footage of the incident went viral.

On July 7, the Vishnunagar police registered a case against Mhatre and his supporters under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Maharashtra Medicare Service Persons and Medicare Service Institutions Act. Three of his associates were arrested initially.

Mhatre was arrested on July 8 and subsequently admitted to hospital after his health deteriorated. On July 14, a Kalyan court granted Mhatre bail on a bond of ₹50,000. However, the Bombay High Court cancelled the bail on July 18 and directed him to surrender by July 19.

Mhatre surrendered as directed and was remanded to judicial custody. The Bombay High Court granted Mhatre bail once again on August 7, but imposed a stringent condition barring him from entering Maharashtra until the commencement of the trial.
