Mumbai Hospital Faces Sonography Backlog

A severe shortage of staff and equipment has led to a significant backlog in sonography appointments at the MT Agrawal Super Speciality Hospital in Mulund, Mumbai.

The hospital, which was inaugurated just a few months ago, has only one sonography machine and one radiologist, resulting in patients having to wait up to 15-20 days for an appointment. In some cases, the wait can be as long as a month.

This delay is particularly concerning for pregnant women and those who require urgent diagnostic evaluation. Despite the hospital's investment of around Rs 470 crore, the lack of basic diagnostic facilities has become a major issue.

Hospital officials have stated that emergency cases and pregnant women are given priority, but the heavy patient load has led to many others being assigned appointments weeks in advance.

The situation has been exacerbated by the fact that sonography services at two other civic hospitals, Veer Savarkar Municipal Hospital and Seven Rasta Municipal Hospital, are currently non-functional. As a result, patients from these hospitals are being referred to MT Agrawal Hospital, putting additional pressure on its already overstretched sonography unit.

A doctor from the hospital's sonography department noted that the hospital is struggling to cope with the demand, saying, "At present, the hospital has only one sonography machine and one doctor. Patients from two other civic hospitals are also being referred here as their ultrasound services are not operational."

The issue has caught the attention of the Leader of the Opposition, Kishori Pednekar, who visited the hospital on Friday to review the healthcare services. Pednekar assured that the issue would be taken up with the civic administration to ensure that the required infrastructure and manpower are provided.

Local corporator Rajol Sanjay Patil also accompanied Pednekar on the visit and stated that efforts would be made to ensure that residents of Mulund and Bhandup do not face difficulties in accessing treatment.

The hospital's shortcomings were first highlighted during the recent BEST bus accident in Bhandup, when several injured patients had to be shifted to other hospitals due to inadequate treatment facilities. Since then, complaints regarding the availability of medical services have continued to surface.

The BMC has invested heavily in the MT Agrawal Super Speciality Hospital, but the lack of basic diagnostic facilities has raised questions about the effectiveness of this investment.

The situation at the hospital is a reflection of the broader challenges facing the healthcare system in Mumbai, where patients often have to wait for long periods to access basic medical services.
