Madhya Pradesh Floods: Heavy Rains Hit Rewa, Chhatarpur

Incessant rains have caused flood-like situations in several places across Madhya Pradesh, with Rewa and Chhatarpur being the worst affected.

The city of Rewa experienced nine straight hours of rain, resulting in rivers in the Tarai region overflowing on Thursday. Water clogged roads and fields up to 3 feet in low-lying areas of the city. Revenue and police teams have been patrolling rivers, streams, and flood-affected zones since morning, urging people to stay away from riverbanks.

Similarly, waterlogging was reported in Chhatarpur after heavy rains. The situation worsened at Gaurihar bus stand as rainwater entered shops, causing damage to stock and property. Residents complained that inadequate drainage facilities at the bus stand have turned roads into ponds, making it difficult for commuters to pass by. Consequently, traffic remained disrupted for several hours.

Locals alleged that the culverts and drains at the bus stand were not cleaned prior to the rainy season. Troubled by waterlogging, residents and shopkeepers have demanded that responsible officials ensure the immediate drainage of water and the cleaning of the bus stand's drains and culverts. They state that if the situation is not rectified in time, conditions could worsen during the upcoming rains.

A warning has been issued for extremely heavy rainfall in 4 districts, including Satna, Katni, Panna, Damoh, and Maihar, with expected rainfall ranging from 115.6 to 204.4 millimetres at isolated locations on August 20. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds blowing at speeds of 30 to 40 km/h are expected.

Meanwhile, a warning has been issued for heavy rainfall in 9 districts, including BSidhi, Rewa, Mauganj, Shahdol, Jabalpur, Mandla, Sagar, Chhatarpur, and Tikamgarh. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong, gusty winds are also predicted for these districts.

The monsoon is expected to shift towards central and western Madhya Pradesh. The weather update for August 20, 2026, indicates a very heavy rain alert in 4 districts.

The situation in Rewa and Chhatarpur highlights the need for adequate drainage facilities and proper maintenance of culverts and drains. The administration's prompt response to the situation is crucial in preventing further damage and ensuring the safety of residents.

In conclusion, the heavy rains in Madhya Pradesh have caused significant disruption in Rewa and Chhatarpur, with flood-like situations and waterlogging reported in several areas. The administration's efforts to mitigate the situation and prevent further damage are underway, and residents are advised to stay safe and follow the instructions of the authorities.
