Bangladesh PM Not Invited To BRICS Summit

Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has not been invited to attend the BRICS summit in New Delhi as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

This was stated by Bangladesh Foreign Affairs Minister Humaiun Kobir, who added that the invitation was instead extended to the Chair of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC).

Kobir clarified that no one from the Bangladesh government was invited to the BRICS summit. He also mentioned that the BIMSTEC Chair was invited, and since Rahman is the current BIMSTEC Chair, he has been invited to the outreach session in that capacity.

BIMSTEC is a regional grouping comprising India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal and Bhutan. India, which is hosting the BRICS summit, has invited several countries to attend the outreach session, including the BIMSTEC Chair.

The Bangladesh government is working to arrange a bilateral visit by Rahman to India when the timing is conducive. Earlier, Rahman was expected to make a three-day official visit to India from August 23, but the visit was postponed.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal had stated earlier that there was no update on any confirmation from Dhaka regarding Rahman's participation in the BRICS summit.

The BRICS summit is scheduled to take place in New Delhi, and several world leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, are expected to attend.
