BMC Adopts AI, Drones To Fight Illegal Constructions

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has approved a proposal to use advanced technology to detect and prevent illegal constructions and encroachments across Mumbai.

The decision was made by the General Body of the BMC, which recognized the need to supplement traditional inspection methods with modern technology.

The proposal includes the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), drone surveys, satellite imagery, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and real-time monitoring systems to identify new illegal constructions, unauthorized additional floors, and structural alterations at an early stage.

A GPS-enabled mobile application and an online citizen complaint portal will also be launched, allowing residents to submit geo-tagged complaints that will provide the exact location of the issue to the authorities.

The BMC has been directed to develop an AI-based Illegal Construction Detection System, conduct regular drone and satellite monitoring, and introduce a digital public complaint mechanism.

The decision is expected to strengthen the BMC's ability to detect and enforce against unauthorized developments, which have been affecting urban planning, public safety, traffic management, and environmental protection in Mumbai.

According to BJP corporator Tajinder Singh Tiwana, the rapid rise in illegal constructions and encroachments has been a major concern for the city.
