Meghalaya CM Releases ₹93.7 Crore Scholarship For 96,812 ST Students

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has released the first instalment of a scholarship programme for 96,812 Scheduled Tribe students in the state. The amount of ₹93.7 crore, which is 40% of the total outlay for the Umbrella Post-Matric Scholarship, was released through direct benefit transfer (DBT) and will be credited to the beneficiaries' bank accounts.

The scholarship programme is aimed at helping students meet tuition fees, hostel expenses, cost of books, and other educational materials. The total estimated expenditure for the scholarship this academic year is ₹198.42 crore, with the Centre contributing ₹84.55 crore and the state government sanctioning ₹9.4 crore as its 10% contribution.

Under this system, funds are transferred directly by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to beneficiaries after verification and completion of the required formalities by the state.

The chief minister said that the process of crediting the scholarship amounts to students' bank accounts could take four to five working days. He also directed the Education Department to continuously monitor failed transactions arising from incorrect bank details, Aadhaar-seeding issues, or other mismatches and ensure that eligible students receive their scholarships.
