Indore Snake Rescues Drop 82% To 5 In 2026

A significant decline in snake rescues was recorded in Indore during Nag Panchami this year, with only 5 snakes rescued, the lowest figure in the past 5 years. According to Forest Department records, the number of snake rescues and seizures has been decreasing over the years, from 35 in 2022 and 2023, to 17 in 2024, 28 in 2025, and finally 5 in 2026.

The decline in snake rescues is attributed to the efforts of the Forest Department, which conducted an extensive drive to train, advise, and warn snake charmers against catching and displaying snakes during Nag Panchami. Despite this, groups of snake charmers were still seen in various parts of the city, including Mahunaka, Labaria Bheru, Rajwada, and Annapurna, carrying live snakes and moving from house to house as residents offered prayers.

The Forest Department formed three teams to monitor the city and cover areas such as Navlakha, Bhanwarkuan, Ring Road, Rajwada, Vijay Nagar, Annapurna, Labaria Bheru, and adjoining areas. Forest ranger Sangeeta Thakur stated that the department had advised snake charmers to carry metal representative snakes instead of real snakes, as this could provide a livelihood without harming the animals.

Five snakes were rescued during the operation, including one caught by Ashish Yadav's team in Jinsi. However, snake charmers claimed that they would release the snakes into the forest and that their teeth had been removed, although these claims could not be independently verified.

Kailashnath, a 65-year-old snake rescuer, emphasized the importance of seeking professional help in case of a snake encounter. He advised residents not to try to catch snakes themselves and to contact trained rescuers or the Forest Department instead. In case of a snakebite, immediate medical treatment should be sought, and residents should avoid cutting the wound, sucking venom, applying home remedies, or using a tight tourniquet.

The decline in snake rescues is a positive sign, indicating that the efforts of the Forest Department are yielding results. However, the presence of snake charmers on the streets during Nag Panchami highlights the need for continued awareness and education about the importance of protecting snakes and their habitats.

The Forest Department's efforts to train and advise snake charmers are a step in the right direction, but more needs to be done to ensure that snakes are protected and respected. As Kailashnath noted, the monsoon season brings frequent rescue calls, and it is essential that residents are aware of the importance of seeking professional help in case of a snake encounter.

In conclusion, the decline in snake rescues in Indore is a positive development, but it is crucial that the Forest Department and residents continue to work together to protect snakes and their habitats. By raising awareness and promoting education, we can ensure that snakes are respected and protected, and that the number of snake rescues continues to decline in the future.

The significance of this development extends beyond Indore, as it highlights the importance of protecting wildlife and their habitats. As India continues to urbanize and develop, it is essential that we prioritize the protection of our natural resources and the animals that inhabit them. By working together, we can ensure that our cities are safe and sustainable for both humans and animals.

Overall, the decline in snake rescues in Indore is a positive sign, and it is essential that we continue to work towards protecting snakes and their habitats. By promoting education and awareness, we can ensure that snakes are respected and protected, and that our cities are safe and sustainable for both humans and animals.
