Vidyavihar Flyover Nears Completion, To Open After September 8

The Vidyavihar flyover project in Mumbai has entered its final phase, with most construction work completed. The pending work, which includes the concrete casting of two spans, is expected to be completed by August 31.

The BMC will then conduct load testing and other mandatory technical safety checks before opening the flyover to vehicular traffic. The flyover is likely to become operational after September 8, civic officials said.

The connector links Ramkrishna Chemburkar Marg in the east with Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg in the west and includes a 100-metre stretch over the railway tracks. The bridge will also provide direct access to the footpaths of Vidyavihar railway station, improving connectivity for pedestrians.

A senior official from the BMC's Bridges Department said that barring the concrete casting of two spans, most of the work has been completed. After completion, load testing and technical safety checks will be carried out before opening the flyover for traffic.

To prevent congestion after the flyover becomes operational, the BMC has started widening the approach roads on both sides of the bridge. Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar reviewed the progress and directed officials to address bottlenecks, affected establishments, footpaths and tree-related issues.

The project, first proposed in 1991, gained momentum in 2016, with construction beginning in 2018. Originally scheduled for completion by mid-2022, the project faced delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic and design modifications.

The project cost escalated to Rs 178.93 crore after multiple deadline extensions. AB Infrabuild Limited was awarded the work order in February 2024.

Once operational, the flyover is expected to drastically reduce travel time between Vidyavihar East and West, cutting peak-hour journeys from 40-45 minutes to around 10-15 minutes. The 612-metre-long, four-lane structure features a 100-metre-long railway span, among the longest girders over railway tracks in Mumbai.

Each girder weighs around 1,100 metric tonnes. The flyover is expected to save thousands of commuters time, fuel and travel costs while easing congestion in the area.

The completion of the Vidyavihar flyover is a significant development for Mumbai's infrastructure. It will improve connectivity and reduce travel time for commuters, making it a welcome addition to the city's transportation network.
