Maharashtra Cyber Police File FIR Over Fake AI Video

The Maharashtra Cyber Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against an unidentified individual for allegedly uploading a fake AI-generated video containing misleading content about the Central Government. The video was uploaded on July 30 through the X handle @Bhaijagtap1.

According to the police, the complaint was filed by Nikhil Bhamre, 23, the Maharashtra BJP's social media coordinator, on July 31. Bhamre alleged that he came across the video while scrolling through social media, which had been uploaded with the caption, 'Delhi Police makes serious allegations against the Central Government.'

The video purportedly showed an IPS officer resigning from the police force, stating that the government wanted him to lie about students' protests and portray the protesters as criminals. However, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) examined the video and declared it to be fake, generated using artificial intelligence (AI).

Based on the complaint, the Maharashtra Cyber Police registered a case against an unidentified person under Section 353(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act.
