Anthropic Introduces Rupee Pricing For Claude AI

Anthropic, a leading AI company, has introduced rupee-denominated pricing for its Claude AI subscriptions in India. This move marks the company's first localized pricing initiative in the Indian market, which has become its second-largest market outside the US. The new pricing structure includes Goods and Services Tax (GST) and brings an end to the practice of charging Indian users in US dollars.

The rollout of the new pricing comes as Anthropic deepens its presence in India, having opened a Bengaluru office earlier this year and appointed former Microsoft India managing director Irina Ghose to lead the market. The company has introduced various plans, including Claude Pro, Max, and Team subscriptions, all of which are now billed in Indian rupees.

Under the new structure, Claude Pro is priced at Rs. 1,999 per month when billed annually, taking the total annual cost to Rs. 24,000. Customers who choose monthly billing will be charged Rs. 2,399 each month. Anthropic has also introduced two Claude Max tiers for users with heavier usage needs, with the Max 5x plan priced at Rs. 11,999 per month and the Max 20x plan costing Rs. 23,999 per month.

For businesses, Anthropic has launched two Team plans in India, including the Team Standard plan, which costs Rs. 2,999 per user per month, or Rs. 2,399 per user when billed annually. The Team Premium plan is priced at Rs. 14,999 per user per month, or Rs. 11,999 per user on an annual plan. These plans include a range of features, such as a 200,000 token context window, Claude Code, and API usage credits.

The subscriptions include access to Anthropic's Sonnet 5, Opus, and Fable 5 models, and the free tier of Claude remains available to Indian users as before. Prior to this rollout, Indian users accessing Claude were billed directly in US dollars, with no local pricing tier available. This meant that Indian users faced a forex conversion fee and 18% GST levied by the government on international digital services, making the effective cost of subscriptions higher than the dollar sticker price.

The rupee depreciation over the past year has also contributed to the increasing cost of dollar-priced subscriptions for Indian users. Despite the shift to local billing, Indian pricing still works out higher than US rates in dollar terms. However, the introduction of rupee pricing is expected to make Claude AI more accessible to Indian users and businesses.

The move is significant for the Indian market, where the demand for AI services is growing rapidly. Anthropic's decision to introduce localized pricing is likely to attract more users and businesses to its platform. The company's expansion in India is also expected to create new opportunities for businesses and individuals in the country.

In conclusion, Anthropic's introduction of rupee pricing for Claude AI subscriptions marks a significant milestone in the company's expansion in India. The new pricing structure is expected to make the platform more accessible to Indian users and businesses, and the company's growth in the country is likely to have a positive impact on the local economy.

The introduction of localized pricing is also a testament to Anthropic's commitment to the Indian market. The company's decision to invest in the country and introduce pricing that is tailored to the local market is likely to pay off in the long run. As the demand for AI services continues to grow in India, Anthropic is well-positioned to capitalize on this trend and establish itself as a leading player in the market.

Overall, the introduction of rupee pricing for Claude AI subscriptions is a positive development for the Indian market, and it is likely to have a significant impact on the growth of the AI industry in the country.
