Indore Doctor Loses ₹6.11 Lakh To Fake Syrian Doctor Scam

A doctor in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, has lost ₹6.11 lakh to a cyber scam after being befriended on Facebook by a woman claiming to be a doctor from Syria. The doctor, Ayaz Ahmed Qureshi, had become friends with the woman, who used the name 'Dr Ayesha Khan', on May 1.

During their chat, Dr Ayesha Khan told Qureshi that she wanted to move to India due to the war in Syria. A few weeks later, she informed him that she had reached Delhi but was facing issues with Customs, who had held her medical equipment and personal belongings.

The scammers, pretending to be Customs officials and RBI representatives, then contacted Qureshi and asked him to pay clearance fees to release the seized items. Believing their story, Qureshi sent money in several transactions, totaling ₹6.11 lakh.

The transactions included ₹25,000, ₹49,000, ₹47,000, and ₹4.90 lakh, all of which were sent to different accounts. However, when the requests for money did not stop, Qureshi realized that he had fallen prey to a scam.

He immediately reported the incident to the state cyber cell, and the case was later transferred to the Azad Nagar police station. The police have registered a case and are currently investigating the bank accounts and phone numbers used in the crime.
