E20 Petrol Reduces Mileage By 3-5%: Oil Ministry

The Oil Ministry has stated that petrol blended with 20% ethanol, known as E20, can reduce fuel economy by 3-5% in some vehicles. This reduction in mileage is due to the higher ethanol content in the fuel.

However, the ministry claims that the benefits of E20 outweigh the drawbacks. These benefits include cleaner combustion, higher octane rating, better anti-knock characteristics, smoother acceleration, and lower lifecycle carbon emissions.

The Oil Ministry released a detailed question-and-answer document to address criticism of the Ethanol Blended Petrol Programme. According to the ministry, E20 was introduced after thorough scientific testing and consultations with automobile manufacturers.

The ministry cited feedback from automobile manufacturers such as Maruti Suzuki and Hero MotoCorp, which reported no E20-related corrosion, abnormal wear, or component-life damage in vehicles serviced under real-world conditions.

The ministry also rejected demands for petrol pumps to offer multiple fuel grades, stating that maintaining parallel nationwide supply chains would increase logistics costs and complicate fuel distribution.

In terms of pricing, the ministry said that E20 is not necessarily cheaper than conventional petrol, as ethanol procurement prices are fixed at remunerative levels to support farmers. The objective of the programme is to reduce India's dependence on imported crude, improve price stability, and strengthen energy security.

Since the 2014-15 ethanol supply year, the ethanol blending programme has saved over Rs 1.97 lakh crore in foreign exchange, displaced nearly 316 lakh tonnes of crude oil imports, reduced around 952 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, and transferred over Rs 1.66 lakh crore to farmers.

While some vehicle owners may be concerned about the mileage impact, the government maintains that the wider benefits of E20, including cleaner engine operation and reduced dependence on imported fuel, outweigh the drawbacks.

The ministry has urged consumers not to be influenced by misinformation regarding E20, stating that the fuel has been validated by vehicle manufacturers, testing agencies, oil marketing companies, and regulators before its nationwide adoption.

The introduction of E20 petrol is a significant step towards reducing India's dependence on imported crude and improving energy security. As the country continues to transition towards cleaner and more efficient fuels, the benefits of E20 are expected to outweigh the minor reduction in mileage.

In conclusion, the Oil Ministry's statement on E20 petrol highlights the importance of considering the broader benefits of cleaner fuels, even if they may have some minor drawbacks. As India continues to prioritize energy security and reduce its dependence on imported crude, the adoption of E20 petrol is a step in the right direction.

The long-term gains of E20 petrol, including reduced carbon emissions and improved energy security, are expected to have a positive impact on the environment and the economy.

Overall, the introduction of E20 petrol is a significant development in India's transition towards cleaner and more efficient fuels.
