Navi Mumbai Hospital Implants Leadless Pacemaker In 64-Year-Old

A 64-year-old man, Mr. Bhanu Shankar Pandey, who had undergone emergency angioplasty for a major heart attack, was successfully treated with a leadless dual-chamber pacemaker at Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai.

The patient had developed Complete Heart Block, a condition where the heart's electrical system fails, after his angioplasty procedure. This condition made an urgent permanent pacemaker implantation necessary.

The cardiology team at Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai recommended a leadless dual-chamber pacemaker, which is implanted directly inside the heart through a small puncture in the leg vein. This advanced device eliminates the need for a chest incision, surgical pocket, or pacing leads.

According to Dr. Sanjeevkumar Kalkekar, Senior Interventional Cardiologist at Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai, the leadless pacemaker technology allowed the doctors to safely implant the device without interrupting dual antiplatelet therapy. This helped avoid the bleeding risks associated with conventional pacemaker surgery while protecting the patient from potentially fatal stent thrombosis.

The procedure involved implanting two miniature wireless pacemakers, one in the right atrium and the other in the right ventricle, to restore the heart's normal electrical coordination. The procedure was completed in under an hour, and the patient was able to walk the following day.

The patient was discharged without any chest scar or surgical wound. Leadless pacemakers are particularly beneficial for patients who cannot safely discontinue blood-thinning medication, those at high risk of infection, patients requiring long-term pacing, individuals with difficult venous access, and those who are at risk of bleeding complications.

The success of this procedure highlights the importance of advanced medical technology in saving lives. The leadless pacemaker implantation has given the patient a second chance at life, and he is now able to resume his normal activities without any complications.

The use of leadless pacemakers is a significant advancement in the field of cardiology, and it has the potential to benefit many patients who are at risk of bleeding complications or other complications associated with conventional pacemaker surgery.

In conclusion, the implantation of a leadless dual-chamber pacemaker in a 64-year-old man with heart block at Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai is a significant medical achievement. It highlights the importance of advanced medical technology and the expertise of doctors in saving lives and improving patient outcomes.
