Meghalaya Police Arrests KSU Leader Over August 19 Violence

Meghalaya Police have arrested Jeremaiah Pohthmi, the president of the KSU Nongmynsong Unit, in connection with the violence that occurred on August 19 following the Khasi Students' Union's 'Black Flags Bike Rally'. The arrest took place on August 24 in Guwahati.

Pohthmi, who is also the Assistant Organising Secretary of the union's Central Executive Council, has been accused of inciting violence and causing physical injuries during the disturbances. The East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Vivek Syiem, stated that Pohthmi will be produced before the court to seek custody for questioning.

The total number of KSU members and leaders detained in the case has now risen to four. Three senior KSU leaders, including KSU CEC president Raymond Kharjana, vice-president Pynkmen Sanmiet, and general secretary Reuben A. Najiar, were arrested after the rally and are currently detained in Baghmara, Williamnagar, and Tura respectively.

The East Khasi Hills police are seeking clearance from Police Headquarters to bring these three senior leaders back to Shillong from their detention facilities in the Garo Hills to facilitate the investigation. A Special Investigation Team has been formed under the supervision of the Inspector General (Law and Order) to expedite the investigation and identify those involved in the violence.

The police are facing difficulties in identifying several people who covered their faces during the violence. To overcome this, they are using forensic and technical methods to establish their identities. Once identified, legal action will be taken against those responsible.
