Mahakal Temple Audit Reveals Missing Records

A recent audit of the Mahakal Temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, has raised serious concerns over transparency in the administration of the temple. The audit report for the financial year 2023-24 found that the Mahakal Temple Management Committee failed to provide several important records, including immovable property registers and physical inventory records.

The missing records included those related to land donations, storehouse inventory, and temple shops. The auditors were unable to verify important financial and administrative transactions due to the absence of these records. Furthermore, 256 audit objections raised in previous years remained unresolved as of March 31, 2024.

The temple's functioning has been criticized by local leaders, including Ujjain MP Anil Firojiya and Mayor Mukesh Tatwal, who have written to the authorities on multiple occasions regarding alleged administrative irregularities. One of the major objections relates to the diversion of the temple's share of revenue from the Ramghat cremation ground to priests.

According to the audit report, the 35% share of revenue from the Ramghat cremation ground belongs to the Temple Management Committee under the Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple Act, 1982. However, instead of depositing the amount into the temple's account, Rs 1,36,36,120 was paid to priests. The auditors have directed that the amount be recovered and deposited into the temple fund.

The audit report also noted that the mandatory physical verification of stores, furniture, office equipment, and other movable assets was not carried out during 2023-24. Additionally, registers relating to stock, stores, and office articles were either incomplete or not properly maintained, making it impossible to independently verify the existence of assets.

Payments worth Rs 67.95 lakh made to the Public Works Department for construction-related works were also questioned, as the committee released funds without obtaining completion certificates, utilisation records, or physical verification reports from the concerned departments. The report also objected to Rs 10.11 lakh spent on protocol arrangements, including laddoo prasad, gifts, and hospitality, stating that the expenditure was incurred without approval through a formal resolution of the Temple Management Committee.

The Mahakal Temple is one of the richest shrines in the country, and its finances are under national scrutiny following the Ayodhya donation controversy. The audit report's findings have raised serious questions over transparency in the administration of the temple. The temple's administrator, Pratham Kaushik, stated that the audit report is yet to be received by the temple management.

The Mahakal Temple has a long history and is an important pilgrimage site in India. The temple's administration is responsible for managing its finances, assets, and activities. The audit report's findings highlight the need for greater transparency and accountability in the temple's administration.

The issue of missing records and unresolved objections at the Mahakal Temple is a matter of concern for the devotees and the general public. The temple's management must take immediate action to address these issues and ensure that the temple's finances and assets are managed in a transparent and accountable manner.

In conclusion, the audit report's findings have raised serious questions over transparency in the administration of the Mahakal Temple. The temple's management must take immediate action to address these issues and ensure that the temple's finances and assets are managed in a transparent and accountable manner. This is essential to maintain the trust and confidence of the devotees and the general public.
