BMC Plants 7,662 Saplings Near Kanjurmarg Dumping Ground

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has planted 7,662 saplings around the Kanjurmarg dumping ground as part of its efforts to create a green buffer zone. This initiative is aimed at reducing the odour and pollution emanating from the dump yard.

The plantation drive, which began on June 5, World Environment Day, is part of the first phase of the BMC's plan to plant 15,000 trees in an area of approximately 1 lakh square meters. The mayor, Ritu Tawde, inaugurated the drive.

The species of trees planted include Neem, Bamboo, Arjun, and others that are native to the region and can tolerate pollution. The plantation strategy involves creating an outer zone with tall trees, a middle zone with medium-height trees, and an inner zone with dense shrubs.

The BMC's efforts come after the Bombay High Court criticized the civic body for its inaction in addressing the odour and pollution levels at the Kanjurmarg dumping ground. The court had directed the BMC to take immediate measures to mitigate the problem.

In addition to creating a green buffer zone, the BMC has announced other immediate measures, including a scientific odour mitigation strategy, real-time monitoring and response mechanism, and rationalization of processing facilities. The recycling facilities falling under the buffer zone will be relocated.

The High Court monitoring committee has directed that the buffer zone from residential areas should be at least 500 meters, which is currently around 200 meters. The BMC's efforts are aimed at reducing the adverse impact of the dumping ground on the environment and public health.

The creation of a green buffer zone is a significant step towards mitigating the environmental and health hazards posed by the Kanjurmarg dumping ground. The BMC's initiative is expected to improve the air quality and reduce the odour emanating from the dump yard.

The plantation drive is part of the BMC's larger plan to transform the city and improve its environment. The civic body has been working to address various environmental issues, including pollution, waste management, and conservation of green spaces.

The success of the green buffer zone project will depend on the BMC's ability to maintain and monitor the planted trees. The civic body will need to ensure that the trees receive adequate water and care to survive and thrive.

In the long run, the creation of a green buffer zone around the Kanjurmarg dumping ground is expected to have a positive impact on the environment and public health. It will help reduce the adverse effects of pollution and odour, and improve the quality of life for residents living in the surrounding areas.

The BMC's initiative is a significant step towards creating a more sustainable and environmentally friendly city. It is expected to set an example for other cities and municipalities to follow, and contribute to the national efforts to mitigate the effects of pollution and climate change.

In conclusion, the BMC's efforts to create a green buffer zone around the Kanjurmarg dumping ground are a welcome step towards addressing the environmental and health hazards posed by the dump yard. The success of the project will depend on the civic body's ability to maintain and monitor the planted trees, and its commitment to continuing its efforts to improve the environment and public health in Mumbai.
