Five Tourists Swept Away In Thane Flash Flood

A tragic incident occurred at the Hanuman Waterfall in Thane's Shahapur on Sunday afternoon, where five tourists were swept away by a sudden flash flood caused by heavy rainfall.

The flash flood was triggered by an intense cloudburst-like spell of rain, which led to a rapid rise in the water level, catching the tourists off guard.

According to officials, around 300 to 400 tourists had gathered at the waterfall to enjoy the weekend, and several were near the waterfall behind the Hanuman Temple when the heavy rainfall struck.

Rescue teams, assisted by local residents and trained lifeguards, managed to save three tourists, Prasad Ramesh Ingle, Nitesh Lahu Patil, and Ajay Krishna Mirkute, from the raging waters.

However, two tourists, Akash Mahendra Deshmukh and Dinesh Mendalkar, were swept away by the powerful current, and despite a search operation, only the body of Akash Mahendra Deshmukh was recovered.

The search operation for Dinesh Mendalkar continued late into Sunday evening, despite adverse weather conditions.

The incident highlights the dangers posed by sudden flash floods during the monsoon season in Maharashtra's hill regions, and authorities have renewed their appeal to tourists to strictly follow safety advisories and refrain from entering or venturing close to waterfalls during the monsoon.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had already issued alerts predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall over Thane and adjoining districts, and authorities have advised people to avoid visiting waterfalls, rivers, and other high-risk tourist spots during periods of intense rainfall.

The administration has warned that ignoring official warnings could prove fatal, and rescue teams are expected to resume their search operation on Monday.
