PCMC Demands CBI Probe Into Moshi Tragedy

A chaotic scene unfolded at the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) general body meeting on Wednesday as corporators demanded a CBI or Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the Moshi garbage depot tragedy that claimed nine lives.

The meeting, chaired by Pimpri-Chinchwad Mayor Ravi Landge, began with tributes to the nine workers who died in the landfill collapse. However, the proceedings soon turned stormy as corporators raised slogans and demanded an immediate stop to dumping garbage at the Moshi landfill.

Corporators from the Moshi area stated that the landfill had reached its capacity and declared they would not allow any more waste to be brought there. Heated arguments broke out among corporators from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction), disrupting the proceedings.

Corporator Uttam Kendale demanded a CBI or SIT inquiry into the tragedy, stating that the administration and the elected house were responsible for the incident. He also called for a large-scale bio-mining project and a second waste-to-energy plant to reduce the city’s dependence on the Moshi landfill.

Other corporators, including Sachin Tapkir and Nikhil Borhade, questioned the failure to develop an alternative garbage depot and the burden on the Moshi landfill. Archana Saste demanded steps to reduce the burden on the landfill, while Sarika Gaikwad demanded ₹1 crore compensation and permanent housing for the families of the nine deceased workers.

The tensions escalated when Sandeep Waghere alleged that some elected representatives had not visited the accident site and claimed that rescue operations at the landfill were not carried out with the same urgency as demolitions in other areas. His remarks triggered protests from BJP corporators, who interrupted his speech.

The PCMC general body meeting highlighted the need for immediate action to address the Moshi tragedy and prevent similar incidents in the future. The corporators' demands for a CBI or SIT probe, culpable homicide case, and ₹1 crore aid for the victims' families reflect the gravity of the situation and the need for accountability.

The Moshi garbage depot tragedy has brought attention to the long-standing issues with waste management in Pimpri-Chinchwad. The city's dependence on the Moshi landfill has been a concern for years, and the recent tragedy has underscored the need for alternative solutions.

As the investigation into the tragedy continues, the PCMC and the state government must take concrete steps to address the concerns raised by the corporators and ensure that such incidents do not occur in the future. The people of Pimpri-Chinchwad and the families of the victims deserve justice and accountability.

In conclusion, the PCMC general body meeting has sent a strong message that the citizens of Pimpri-Chinchwad will not tolerate any further negligence or inaction on the part of the authorities. The demand for a CBI or SIT probe and culpable homicide case is a step towards ensuring that those responsible for the tragedy are held accountable.

The tragedy has also highlighted the need for a comprehensive waste management plan for Pimpri-Chinchwad, one that prioritizes the safety and well-being of the citizens and the environment. The PCMC and the state government must work together to develop a sustainable solution to the city's waste management issues and prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.

The significance of this event extends beyond Pimpri-Chinchwad, as it highlights the need for effective waste management and accountability in governance across India. The demand for justice and accountability in the Moshi tragedy is a reminder that the citizens of India will not tolerate negligence or inaction on the part of the authorities, and that those responsible for such tragedies must be held accountable.
