Pimpri-Chinchwad Roads Damaged By Heavy Rains

Heavy rainfall in Pimpri-Chinchwad has left the city's roads in a precarious state, with 602 potholes reported in just eight days. The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has identified these potholes across the city and has begun repair work.

The PCMC maintains a vast network of roads, spanning approximately 2,073 kilometres, including asphalt, cement-concrete, paved, and unpaved roads. However, the heavy rainfall in the first week of July has damaged road surfaces, making daily travel difficult and increasing the risk of accidents.

Potholes have been reported in several areas, including Pimpri, Chinchwad, Nigdi Bhakti-Shakti Chowk, Ravet Mukai Chowk, Spine Road, Moshi, Jadhavwadi, Krishnanagar, Bhosari, Navi Sangvi, Juni Sangvi, Wakad, Tathawade, Punawale, Thergaon, Chikhali, and Akurdi. The Ravet-Aundh BRT route and the road between Nashik Phata and Sant Tukaram Nagar metro station are among the worst-affected stretches.

One of the most severely damaged stretches is the old Pune-Mumbai Highway between Nigdi and Dapodi. The road was previously dug up for water pipeline work but was not restored properly after the project's completion. Instead of full resurfacing, only temporary repairs were carried out, leaving behind large potholes and loose gravel.

The situation has led to an increase in skidding accidents involving two-wheelers, and waterlogging inside potholes has further increased the danger. Motorists are often unable to judge the depth of potholes, leading to sudden swerving and slowing of traffic, which increases the chances of accidents.

Social activist Maruti Bhapkar has submitted a representation to the Municipal Commissioner, demanding immediate repair of all potholes to prevent further accidents. Pramod Ombhase, Chief Engineer of PCMC, stated that continuous rainfall had delayed repair work but assured that the civic body has now started filling potholes using cold-mix material and paving blocks after the rain subsided.

The PCMC has reported that out of the 602 identified potholes, 504 remain to be repaired. The civic body is working to restore the roads as soon as possible to ensure safe travel for commuters.
