Bengaluru Police Arrests Man Over TTP Links, Afghanistan Travel Plan

A 25-year-old man from West Bengal was arrested by Bengaluru police on August 11 over his alleged links with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and suspected plans to travel to Afghanistan. The accused, identified as Asafool Mallik, was living in Bengaluru and working as a security guard in the Jigani Industrial Area.

Mallik, a native of Naopara village in North 24 Parganas district, West Bengal, was detained by police in the Bommasandra Industrial Area after they received information about his alleged suspicious online activities. According to police, Mallik came into contact with an Afghan national, Imran Haider, through Facebook, who is suspected to be associated with the TTP.

Police investigators recovered chats, voice calls, and audio conversations from Mallik's mobile phone, which allegedly indicated that he was seeking assistance to travel to Afghanistan. Mallik had obtained a passport and applied for a visa as part of his reported plans to travel to Afghanistan. He allegedly expressed an intention to join the TTP and carry out retaliatory actions against the Pakistan Army over perceived atrocities against Muslims, mosques, and civilians in Pakistan.

Mallik's online conversations also included references to the Israel-Palestine conflict and calls for retaliation if Muslims faced difficulties in India. However, despite making preparations for the journey, Mallik reportedly did not travel to Afghanistan due to financial difficulties and family responsibilities.

The investigation is now focused on establishing the nature and extent of Mallik's alleged contacts and whether he had any further links to extremist networks. A case has been registered at Hebbagodi police station under Section 113(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), relating to terrorist acts and associated activities.

The arrest and investigation have highlighted concerns over the potential for extremist groups to recruit and radicalize individuals in India. The TTP is a militant organization based in Pakistan and Afghanistan, known for its violent attacks against civilians and security forces.
