Munny the Dog Killed in Mulund Hit-and-Run

A tragic incident occurred in Nirmal Lifestyle Society, Mulund West, on Tuesday afternoon, when a female stray dog named Munny was allegedly run over by an unidentified car. The dog suffered severe injuries and died at the spot.

The incident took place at around noon on August 18, when Munny was sitting on a road inside the society. An unidentified person drove a car at high speed and in a negligent manner, running over the dog and causing serious injuries.

The driver allegedly fled the spot without stopping to help the injured animal, creating panic among residents. Sadhana Ravindranath Maurya, a resident of the Opel Building, immediately informed her daughter, Ritika Maurya, about the incident.

Ritika, an architect and animal lover, had been caring for stray animals in the area, including Munny. She rushed to the spot and found Munny suffering from severe abdominal injuries and heavy bleeding.

Ritika called the police helpline numbers and sought assistance. She also called veterinary doctor Dr Abhijit Kulkarni to examine the dog. The veterinarian subsequently declared Munny dead.

The Mulund police have registered an FIR against the unidentified accused under relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

Although the society's CCTV cameras did not capture the actual collision, footage showed a car passing through the area around the time of the incident. Police are examining the available CCTV footage and conducting further investigations to identify the vehicle and its driver.

The incident highlights the need for responsible driving and compassion towards animals. The police are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward and help identify the driver.

The death of Munny has sent shockwaves among animal lovers in the community, and many are demanding stricter laws to prevent such incidents in the future.

In recent years, there have been several initiatives to promote animal welfare in Mumbai, including the introduction of QR-enabled reflective collars for stray dogs. However, more needs to be done to prevent such tragic incidents and ensure the safety of animals on the city's streets.
